Things had grown worse for the champion Vadim Nemkov before the Bellator Light Heavyweight World Grand Prix finals matchup against Corey Anderson at Bellator 277.
Fortunately, a headbutt made a cut and caused the fight to be ruled a no-contest. The two fought again on Friday night in Chicago, and Nemkov won by unanimous decision in the main event of Bellator 288 thanks to improved wrestling defence.
From the first round on, Nemkov used a strong jab and powerful leg kicks to keep distance and control the tempo of the fight. Nemkov delivered clean, straight right punches to Anderson’s jaw when he readjusted to that attempt to keep the opponent on his toes.
The fight’s most dramatic exchange occurred in Round 1, when Anderson was obviously frightened by a late spinning kick from Nemkov that landed on his head.
While Nemkov’s flamboyant strikes would no longer be as effective, they had also produced a conundrum that Anderson was unable to resolve. Takedowns had been crucial in allowing Anderson to dominate the first fight prior to the cut.
