Stephanie Murphy was born Ng Th Ngc Dung on September 16, 1978, and she has served as the representative for Florida’s 7th congressional district in the federal government since 2017. In 2016, she ran as a Democrat and was victorious in her election challenge against the incumbent Republican John Mica.

The majority of downtown and northern Orlando, as well as the whole city of Winter Park, Maitland, Sanford, and Altamonte Springs, are contained within the district’s boundaries.

Murphy was born in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, in 1978, and she and her family emigrated from the nation the following year, in 1979. After spending his childhood in Northern Virginia, Murphy went on to receive his higher education at Georgetown University and the College of William and Mary.

Early Life and Education

Stephanie Murphy was born on September 16, 1978, in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam (then known as Saigon) (ng Th Ngc Dung, her surname). Her family fled Communist-controlled Vietnam when she was only six months old. They were at sea when their boat ran out of fuel, and the US Navy rescued them. She grew up in Northern Virginia, where they settled.

Murphy earned a Bachelor of Arts in economics from the College of William and Mary with the help of Pell Grants and student loans. She then went on to Georgetown University, where she earned a Master of Science in foreign service.

U.S. Congresswoman Stephanie Murphy represents Florida’s Seventh Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives. The district encompasses all of Seminole County, as well as a substantial chunk of northern Orange County, as well as downtown Orlando, Maitland, Winter Park, and the University of Central Florida.
