Nic Pizzolatto’s American anthology crime drama television series True Detective debuted with its first season on the premium cable network HBO on January 12, 2014. Matthew McConaughey, Woody Harrelson, Michelle Monaghan, Michael Potts, and Tory Kittles made up the main cast.

True Detective was originally intended to be a novel, but Pizzolatto decided it would work better on television. The actor responded in a Variety interview when asked why he chose to switch roles, “I desired to enter that man’s mind. I’m constantly on the lookout for a man who can monologue, the obsession, the island of a man. It’s a pretty crucial thing because I believe my best work is ahead of me.” The “Four Stages of Rustin Cohle” is a 450-page analysis McConaughey wrote for the part to examine his character’s development over the course of the season.

The next important casting decision for the season was Harrelson, who McConaughey asked to portray Hart.

 According to Harrelson, he joined True Detective in part to reunite with some of the cast members he had previously worked with in the HBO movie Game Change in 2012.

 Because of the plot’s development and Maggie’s character’s backstory, Michelle Monaghan felt obligated to accept the role of the season’s female protagonist. The principal cast was completed by Michael Potts and Tory Kittles, who played the detectives Maynard Gilbough and Thomas Papania, respectively.  Kevin Dunn plays Major Ken Quesada in the first season of True Detective, Alexandra Daddario plays Lisa Tragnetti, and Brad Carter plays Charlie Lange.

Pizzolatto focused his hunt for a prospective filmmaker on Cary Joji Fukunaga and Alejandro González Iárritu, both of whom he knew via Anonymous Content. After Iárritu withdrew from the project owing to cinematic commitments, Fukunaga was formally named as director.

Fukunaga spent time with a Louisiana State Police homicide detective in order to prepare for his work on the series. the Criminal Investigations Division of the State Police to provide a realistic representation of a homicide detective’s work in the 1990s. As the project’s cinematographer, Fukunaga hired Top of the Lake director of photography Adam Arkapaw. After the director and Arkapaw haggled over a contract at a meeting in San Francisco, Arkapaw was hired for his roles in Animal Kingdom (2010) and Snowtown (2011).

 The production designer was chosen to be Alex DiGerlando, who Fukunaga had previously collaborated with on Benh Zeitlin’s Glory at Sea in 2008. In an interview, Fukunaga stated, “I knew what Alex accomplished in the Louisiana marshes and how great he could be in designing sets that would only be used for one or two days before being abandoned.

Although Pizzolatto first planned for True Detective to be a novel, after the concept took shape, he felt that television would be a better fit for the story’s time and perspective shifts.  From May to July 2010, he wrote six screenplays, including an early 90-page draught of the True Detective pilot script. He also pitched an adaptation of Galveston.

Shortly after, Pizzolatto obtained a development agreement with HBO for a prospective pilot television program. With the help of the production company and management Anonymous Content, which ultimately produced and developed the idea in-house, he penned a second True Detective script not long after leaving The Killing.

 Following a competitive bidding process, HBO ordered eight episodes of True Detective in April 2012, with a $4–4.5 million budget. Because he considered a collaborative approach would not fit with his solitary, novelistic process and that a group would not produce the desired outcome, Pizzolatto chose not to employ a writing crew. The finished project script was 500 pages long and the result of nearly three months of lone labor.
