The U.S. House of Representatives is set to vote on holding Attorney General Merrick Garland in contempt of Congress this Wednesday, according to sources familiar with the matter.
This comes as part of an ongoing battle between Congress and the Department of Justice over the release of documents related to the Trump-era family separation policy at the southern border.
House Democrats have accused Garland and the DOJ of withholding key information and being uncooperative with their requests.
According to a report by Reuters, more than 2,000 children were separated from their families during former President Donald Trump’s “zero tolerance” policy, which aimed to deter illegal immigration. The practice sparked widespread outrage and was ultimately halted by a federal judge in 2023.
House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerry Nadler has been leading the charge for the release of documents related to the policy, citing Congress’s oversight responsibilities.
However, he claims that the DOJ has only provided a fraction of what was requested and withheld key information that would shed light on how the controversial policy was implemented.
The contempt vote is just one aspect of ongoing tensions between Congress and the DOJ under Garland’s leadership. Earlier this year, Garland also faced criticism for not being more aggressive in pursuing investigations into former President Trump and his administration.
The DOJ has maintained that they are working diligently to comply with the requests from Congress, but argue that some of the information is sensitive and should not be made public. They have also expressed concerns about setting a precedent for future administrations if they hand over certain documents.
Wednesday’s vote will likely pass in the Democrat-controlled House, but it remains to be seen how this ongoing feud between Congress and the DOJ will impact their relationship moving forward. As tensions continue to rise, it is clear that both parties are determined to fight for what they believe is their rightful authority in overseeing the actions of the government.
